A note from our founder
Hi I’m Steven, the founder of Search Engine Marketing.
Picture this: It's early 2020, and I'm running a business with my girlfriend. We're excited about our future, and then... COVID hits. Just like that, our plans crumble. Sound familiar?
But here's the thing about unexpected turns – sometimes they lead you exactly where you need to be.
Discovering My Passion
As the world changed, I had to pivot. Fast. That's when I stumbled into the world of digital marketing. I dove headfirst into learning everything I could about online advertising, and something clicked – I found my calling in Google Ads.
From In-House Expert to Your Go-To Google Ads Agency
Since then, I've worked as an in-house SEA (Search Engine Advertising) specialist for several companies, honing my skills and understanding the unique challenges businesses face. Now, I'm doing what I love most: running Google Ads campaigns for small to medium-sized businesses with monthly ad spends ranging from $500 to $10,000.
Why I Started Search Engine Marketing
Through my experiences, I noticed a pattern. Many of my clients were facing the same problems, over and over. That's why I built Search Engine Marketing, with three core goals in mind:
Save Time: So you can focus on what you do best – running your business.
Avoid Headaches: Google Ads takes years to master. Why struggle when you can leverage my expertise?
Get You Profitable, Fast: The sooner we start optimizing your campaigns, the quicker you'll see results.
Anonymized Case Study: Beauty Salon
This client has a chain of beauty salons, and their previous marketing agency was measuring location visits. They initially had a CPA target for each new customer, but they didn’t know how much revenue each new customer was bringing in through ads.
What did we do
We noticed that they had a booking platform and contacted the platform for a connection to Google Analytics 4. Then we implemented all the variables we needed (add_to_cart, view_item, and more). When we started measuring the value each conversions brought in, we changed the campaigns to maximize conversion value at first, and when the campaigns had enough conversions we put a ROAS target on it.
Next to that we started measuring marketing costs and noticed that each customer spends at least 18 dollars per person on products like shampoo bottles. This greatly improved our insights in how much Google Ads was responsible for their revenue.
In the screenshot below you can see the moment when we changed measuring for location visits to purchases on the booking platform.
The amount of conversions went down but the amount of revenue measured went up.
Anonymized Case Study: Solar company
A local solar company already had a decent amount of traffic through SEO, but they approached us to find extra customers in the months that weren't that busy.
They didn’t have that much expectations but saw that their competitors were advertising on Google as well. In just two months time, we managed to capture the same amount of leads compared to what they manage to capture with SEO each month. Mind you, they have been optimizing their SEO for 5 years.
So what's next for this company? We implemented Enhanced conversions for leads and we're starting with measuring Offline conversions. With offline conversions we can see how many of the generated leads have converted and for how much. This way the campaigns can run on a ROAS target instead of a CPA target.
In the screenshot below you can see the right column representing the amount of leads gathered in the previous 30 days. This client is operating in the EU and has a cookie banner, so it is safe to assume that at least 1 of the Direct conversions is originally from Google Ads.
Anonymized Case Study: pMax Perfection
A new client thought she hit a ceiling in the account and asked for a free Audit of the account. We recently discovered the Flowboost Labelizer script from Floris de Schrijver. When you run the script it tells you how much your campaigns have spent on products with a good ROAS or a bad ROAS.
Although the ROAS we measured was around target (800%), we discovered that she spent a lot of money on products with a ROAS of 112%. As you can see in the screenshot below, a lot of the products we sold were getting a ROAS of at least 17 or above. To hit the target, Google spends the rest of the money on customers that will get a low ROAS.
So how did we turn this bad spending around? We adjusted the script a little bit, created a supplemental feed in Merchant Center and created two campaigns. One for products with a near- or over index. The other one with the rest of the products.
The scripts now scans the results of the products daily and puts them in one campaign or the other. We managed to cut down costs on low ROAS products with 78% and got a better return on our investment.
